Chevrolet Cruze in the line of fire 0

The brand new 2012 Chevrolet Cruze has been subject to a federal inquiry in the United States. The news is related to complaints that the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze caught fire.

Complaint of a fire

Last year’s model saw an official complaint from a customer that their model had flames coming from his car when he was travelling at the speed of 45 MPH. This was reported at the end of last month.

An official statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration “The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze. While travelling 45 mph, the contact noticed flames coming from the front of the vehicle without warning of a problem. The fire department was called to extinguish the fire and no one was injured. The vehicle was not diagnosed.”

370,000 models under threat

General Motors have stated that the investigation consists of 370,000 Chevrolet Cruzes built from 2011 – 2012. The company also stated that they will continue to cooperate with the.

No recall as of yet

At the moment there is no recall for the vehicle. Everything is being conducted at the stage just below that of a recall, with the investigation in “Probing” status. It is not known as to whether the car will be recalled. The investigation being conducted by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration could lead to a recall if there is sufficient evidence.

Demanding details from General Motors

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received two complaints in total of the Chevrolet Cruze starting a fire. They are now demanding that General Motors submit any complaints made to them of smoke from the engine, engine compartment fires or overheated wiring in either the Chevrolet Cruze 2011 or 2012 model. The request made the NHTSA also focuses on a computer module that connects to the transmission; this may also have a strong connection to a potential fire being caused.

A great success for Chevrolet

The Cruze has been one of Chevrolet’s best models on the market. Previously the company did not have a competitive small car to compete in the American market. Since it’s arrival back in 2010, the Cruze has managed to reach the top of the sales charts to become the best selling small car in the United States.

This year has seen sales of 75,000 Chevrolet Cruzes this year which represents the same sales rate as last year.
