The Chevrolet Corvette turns 60 0
Chevrolet celebrated 60 years of business this year. Although the first ever Corvette came off the production line in June 1953, Chevrolet consider 2012 it’s 60th anniversary year. Throughout the years Chevrolet has done it all. They began with creating muscle cars in the 1960’s.
They expanded their line-up to family vehicles including saloons and station wagons. But their most famous creation has to be the Chevrolet Corvette is an iconic car. It’s two seats and a fibre glass body. It’s style influenced future generations of sporty roadsters. The car also delivered a splendid performance to back it up. The vehicle is still in American car showrooms today. Who would have thought that? The Corvette was originally created under a secret code name, named the XP-122. January 1953 saw Chevrolet reveal a number of concept cars at a General
Motors event. The Corvette stole the show and hasn’t looked back since. At first Chevrolet produced the car but in limited numbers as a precautionary measure. Just 150 were built to start off with. This brought people into Chevrolet dealerships initallity with that figure doubling to 300. Eventually 3,640 were sold in 1954, an increase of more than 100 per cent. Production of the car had to be shifted in order to satisfy the great demand for the vehicle. The car naturally had better equipment in 1954 too, meaning more sophisticated materials and production equipment had to be used. It may sound strange to hear now, but back then many did not give the car much of a chance to stay in production.
Those who doubted the Chevrolet Corvette would have never have guessed that they would be celebrating 60 years of continuous production. From the XP-122 concept to the Corvette, the car has managed to sell a staggering 1.5 million models in it’s lifetime. Some describe the Corvette as a dream car. The 2013 model certainly is just that for many not only in the United States, but across the whole world. The new Corvette will have a massive 7.0 litre V8 engine making it the fastest ever in history. This will have a 60th Chevrolet Corvette anniversary package which includes a specially designed interior and an Arctic White coloured body with Pearl Silver Blue racing strips.
