New Vauxhall Astra hits the road 0
The Vauxhall Astra is everywhere. Not only are they incredibly popular in the UK, they’re marketed all over the world. It is said that of the 12million Astra’s sold in Europe, 3million of them were in the UK. Now on its seventh generation, the new Astra promises even more than its six older siblings.
It was announced at the UK media launch of the new Astra that the cars will be built at the only remaining British plant in Ellesmere. The plant, located near Liverpool, will keep jobs going until at least 2020.
This is the first Astra to offer GM’s personal connectivity and service assistant, OnStar. The system features both safety and comfort services. The most efficient being the emergency contact; if the airbag is deployed, OnStar alerts an advisor, who calls to see if you need help, if there is no answer, the emergency services will be called out to your location. Other fun features include connectivity for up to seven devices and the OnStar system makes the Astra a 4G mobile data hotspot. If you want to listen to music or podcasts, make a call or use Skype, talk to Google or Siri, then the newest edition of IntelliLink is available. The system connects to both Apple and Android phones and can be controlled via the large touchscreen, steering wheel remote pad or by voice activation.
When the Astra arrives in dealers in the UK, it’ll come in the usual variety of petrol and diesel engines. 1.0-litre three-cylinder, 1.4 and 1.6 petrol (all turbocharged), and later, the new 1.6-litre Whisper diesel.
A new feature that all the new Astra’s will have is the headlights. Only found on luxury models just a few years ago, the glare-free IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights feature eight individual LED segments per light, which automatically adapt to how much light you need. The front camera senses when a vehicle is driving towards you and dims the lights, to avoid momentarily blinding the other driver. You have the option to switch the beams on full when you’re out of urban areas and studies have found that these lights make driving much safer.
The prices for the new Astra start from £15,295, with all optional items costing extra.
