Vauxhall have established themselves as the number one commercial vehicle producer in the UK. This is now the 11th consecutive year that the company have achieved the same feat. The Luton and Ellesmere Port factories create the vehicles, making 58,000 plus last year alone.
The Luton plant produced 53,465 vans last year. 58,838 Astravans were developed in total with the Ellesmere factory creating 5,373 vans in total.
The Vauxhall Vivaro saw its production figures drop down by 14,638 last year, following a major decline.
Fears about both plants were rife last year with Vauxhall continuing to struggle with sales. However both the factories saw their future secured with the production of the new generation Vivaro to head into next decade. Production will begin in 2014. The Ellesmere plant was recently named as the company’s leading factory in Europe.
One vehicle set to cease production is the Vauxhall Astravan. After 2013, the van will no longer be produced. This is thanks to the new Combo range Vauxhall have said.
New vans below 3.5 tonnes dipped 20.9 per cent, selling just 26,524 units in 2012. Their overall market share in light commercial fell to 11 per cent. Volkswagen saw their share rise to 13 per cent coming second to Ford who have a 13 per cent market share.
Vauxhall managed to increase their retail customer base by selling more light commercial vehicles to retail customers. They managed to sell 11,000 units to small businesses.
